The Hope Alliance Orphanage Needs Your Help

On Sunday May 25th, 2008 I had the opportunity to visit The Hope Alliance Orphanage located in New Haven, Connecticut. Surrounded by Peace, Calm, Serenity, and Pure Love, this is home for more than 20 special needs cats. Founded in 1992 by Lisa Mary Ruoppolo, this sanctuary is a little piece of heaven here on earth. Lisa has dedicated her life to caring for these special needs cats that would otherwise be euthanized by other organizations due to lack of resources. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the orphans live in a clean and healthy environment where they are able to roam freely. At The Hope Alliance they are treated with Compassion and Respect. They are truly loved and accepted just the way they are. Some have physical needs, some emotional, others both. Meet Payton. Born without back legs, he arrived at the Safe Haven three weeks ago. In addition to caring for special needs cats, they are still able to take in a limited number of cats who are healthy but have been abandoned on the streets. The Hope Alliance practices a “no kill” policy. If they cannot be adopted, they will reside at the Orphanage indefinitely. Each Hope Alliance cat receives veterinary care from Dr.Efren Osorio and his wonderful staff located in North Branford,Connecticut. Please consider making a donation to this magical place. There are many ways you can help. For the Locals…Volunteers are always needed. Even if only a few hours each month. Their Wish List… Canned cat food… Friskies & 9-Lives

                          Right problems:
                          1. My cats are kittens (8 months and 4 months), but wont eat kitten food, despite two weeks of trying. They were weaned by their previous owner onto really dodgy, dubious supermarket value food, and the only thing they will eat now apart from that is Felix, and not even the kitten food. What can I supplement their diet with, to ensure they are getting kitten nutrients?

                          2. What is the most nutritous, value for money cat food to feed cats? I read somewhere that cats eat until they’ve got enough nutrients, and my cats are eating double what they are supposed to and are still pretty skinny (and yes, they have been wormed). So if I try and slowly wean them onto a more expensive premium cat food, will it work out the same in the long run?

                          3. The cats wont eat dry food (we put down wet food 2 times a day and dry food all the time) despite the previous owner saying they ate that type of cat food. Even when you mix it in with wet food, they push the dry food aside.

Our seven month old girl cat gets red-rimmed eyes, sometimes pretty badly but it varies. She also always has dark matter in the corners of her eyes. We wipe it away but it comes right back. The boy cat (her brother) doesn’t get it so much, but a little.

There are fleas, but it’s winter and we comb them both with a flea comb often. We find very few fleas. Especially after having treated them with a natural spray-on flea remedy.

They both seem pretty healthy otherwise. Thanks so much.
