Bear – Then & Now (Can someone tell me what this is?)
Does anyone know what this can be? He lost 1 kg since 2/3 months and from scratching (itch) he lost a lot of his fur around his neck (in general his coat is a lot thinner than it was before). He’s treated for fleas, so that’s not it. I’m thinking about a food allergy or a hormonal issue (he’s neutered at October 04). Been to the vet already, but they also can’t tell me what it is. The only thing i can do is wait and see if it’s gonna disappear by itself or i can go to a dermatologist… Maybe someone recognize these symptoms?? (Only his appearance has changed, his behavior is still the same)

I don`t know what that is.
Hope se vet know it.Wish you both all the best .
hope this is harmless.
@RockyAndTheDog It does make sense what you’re saying, but does that mean he’s getting his fur back once the weather change?
@KCKILLERCAT Before he was big and a lot of fur, now he lost some weight and his fur is thinner..
I hope he’ll be ok and that someone on here can help you. Poor Bear. Sending love from Jennifer, Pum’kin and Storm xo
I wish i could help, but i have no idea what it is.
Bear is a toughie, i am sure everything will turn out well.
@jennifergwaine Thanks!
Oh dear little Bear, I hope you are ok!
Did your vet run a thyroid test? It could be the problem. I am assuming the regular tests for diabetes, blood problems, liver, enzymes etc were done. Ask your vet about FIP. This is a very hard disease to diagnosis. Only way is through a biopsy. Problem could also be in upper intestine where calories are absorbed. Ask vet about a high calorie diet. Could Bear be stressed about the new kittens in the household? Try veterinary medical information web pages. Your last option is changing vets.
You say he’s treated for fleas..perhaps changing the flea treatment might work. And then there’s always alergies (pesky, hard to diagnose, kitty reactions). Assuming you’ve had a blood panel run, and everything is normal; you might try a different food. There are so many things…I hope Bear finds a diagnosis soon…Many healing thoughts going out to you and Bear!
I agree with the words of celinne700, you will have to make more tests and also change the vet or go to 2 vets. My Kathi (the black one) had a food allergy, but did not lose the fur, she only had some spots as if she has faught with the other cat and it is healing now. Dont feed him the food from the supermarket, buy meat from a butcher, meat with muscels, this is better for cats, they need muscels and also an element called “taurin” (you will have to google this), I had to give this to Nikki.
….. stress with the kittens can be the problem too. But he does not look young anymore in his face, he looks older now, I would not say sick, but not good. Losing 1 kg is much for a cat !! His body looks as if he were a cat with not even 1 year !! So thin !! Does he run and play much with the little ones? So he could also have lost weight. But try and care, a word says that cats have 9 lives !! Nikki consumed just 4 out of 9 and is still living, he will come over it !! trust in cat’s toughness
@celinne700 There are no tests done, only clinical research has happened and from the things i told it apparently didn’t look like something bad. I was told to wait it out for a while or to go to a dermatologist. Maybe his fur is changing because of the heating..? Bear don’t behave sick..
@gigi101060 He runs and play all the time, he always have been that way. He is neutered at october 04, i’m thinking it has something to do with hormones maybe?
@MrBearXMrsBinxx also sick cats are running and playing, I saw this at my last cats which are just gone at the age of 16. What me makes insecure is the lost of weight !! do what I told you, give him the best meat !! and no kidneys, liver, they have all the bad things inside, also humans should not eat often kidneys, there are toxic substances. Good meat from the cow or sheep or chicken, no pig !! try…. I can only pray for him and that the vet will find out what it is. Chicken you should cook
@gigi101060 Thanks, i’m gonna buy meat for him tomorrow, i hope he eats it (he’s a bit picky haha)
@MrBearXMrsBinxx …. once my Nikki, who is very thin because of her sickness, refused to eat, 5 days she ate nothing. Then we had chicken for dinner and we gave her a bit of the raw chicken. She ate it with hunger !!! the following weeks she ate only chicken raw, nothing but that. But the vet said, it should be cook or roasted because of the salmonelles. Try with raw meat, if he does not like it, roast it, try and believe in the future of your lovely cat. they have 9 lives, thats true.
@MrBearXMrsBinxx Kitties with FIP don’t always appear to be ill. The weight loss, more than the fur thinning, is worrying to me. Getting a few tests done might shed some light on what ails him. A blood test is recommended. A lot can be done to help him if an illness is diagnosed in time…so don’t worry. Good luck and I send lots of love to Bear.
I know in your last video you mentioned what type of food they were eating. Bear is getting older, so perhaps try a more adult formula? The Maine Coon food might not have enough nutrients or meat protein for him. Perhaps try a more moist food. Out of curiosity, what are the first 5 ingredients in the food he is eating now? My Neibelung is super skinny, too, but it’s just because she’s getting up there in years, so we give her lots of high protein food and moist meat treats like Mighty Lion.
Alternatively, watch his eating patterns. Make a small diary for about 5 days of his eating / drinking habits (if you can). This will help diagnose anything, like if he nibbles his food, maybe he has sore teeth. Or if he inhales his food, but nothing comes out or it’s runny, he might have IBS or worms.
Perhaps it is the hormonal change? Or late effects of anesthesia? But Bear is surely at good vets – a blood test might be helpful.
Our time honored tom cat Buppi had renal insufficiency and lost weight. But he was much older – bear is still quite young. Bear, I wish you from the bottom of my heart all the best!
Sometimes animals get dry, itchy skin in colder weather, and it’s mainly because the air (from the heat source) sucks the moisture out. You could probably ask your vet about that. If that’s the problem, a supplement should aid in adding helpful oils to his skin…again, ask the vet. If your present vet doesn’t know, seek out another vet.. Hope this helps a little.
@ibsunnysha Thanks, i’m also thinking about giving him a supplement, who knows it might work
My Brittnee is having the same issues. I took her to the vet & they said it was an allergy. They gave me medicine to give to her for 3 weeks. Her fur started to come back slowly but after stopping the medicine she started to lose her fur again. They said that she may have to have a shot given to her every so often if the medicine didn’t work. I’m not sure what going on. Crazy how we have the same cats & one has the same problem. Did you have him checked for worms?
They have a wormer called PROFENDER. It is wonderful!! It treats Round worms, Tape worms and Hook worms. You put it on the back of the cats neck. Like you would if you were treating them for fleas. This product is new to my vet & I was so excited to try it. I really like it!! Good Luck my friend!!
I would register with another Vets ASAP. I hope Bear Recovers soon. Good Luck xx
