Premium Cat Food Archives

I have a cat who has stomach sensitivity to the cheap stuff (Meow Mix to be exact). I believe it may be an allergy. What good cat foods are recommended for cats with this problem?

I hate to sound uneducated. I work at a pet store that only specializes in human grade premium foods. The other day a customer asked me why there wasn’t any DRY Cat foods made with Lamb, Venison, or Buffalo. I felt bad because i didn’t know the answer and really never thought about it until it was brought to my attention. Don’t wild cats like Tigers and Lions eat those kinds of meats in the wild? Why wouldn’t we feed that to our cats? I feed those meats to my dogs and they love it. Being that Cats are so finicky don’t you think they should have a better variety of foods?

I was feeding my cats Fancy Feast since I’ve had them. Then a few days ago I switched their cat food to Blue Buffalo, then Wellness and now EVO. This morning I checked his stool and it was a little, just a little loose (still in shape of poop) and had one drop of blood in it. He does not have diarrhea whatsoever and is EXTREMELY playful. I called up a few vets and they said just keep an eye on him and it’s not that big of a deal. And this other lady at Natural Pawz said the same thing.

So should I just keep feeding him EVO and stuff since it’s already been almost a week since i’ve been giving them these premium foods or add some Fancy Feast?
A vet that especially specializes in cats told me today that there’s no need to bring him by unless he keeps it up. He can’t have worms because there is absolutely no sign of diarrhea, he only poops once a day and is veryyyy playful.

What is the best brand of cat food?

I’m on a budget so I just can’t afford a super premium brand, but I’d like to get my cat the best brand I can afford.

Which cat food should I try? Raw diet maybe?

Ok. I currently feed my cat a combo of Blue Buffalo Spa Select wet and dry. I know all the problems with dry, I just like the idea of her being able to free-feed, mostly because I honestly can’t afford to feed her strictly wet. Because of this, I’ve been looking at other, lower-priced premium foods like Wellness and Natural Balance. Which of these would you recommend, and why? Also, is it a good idea to rotate the brands to add some variety?

One more thing: I’m interested in learning about a raw diet, and I would like to know people’s experience with cost of feeding raw and convenience of preparing the food and obtaining it.

Hi, we just adopted a new kitten last weekend. I haven’t had a cat in over 10 years and the selection of food choices has changed dramatically! There is a local holistic pet food store in our neighborhood and I started there with their advice on the best diet to start off right (my previous cats became overweigt as they got older and had all kinds of digestive issues even with feeding "premium foods") Anyway, the holistic store recommended a holistic grain free balanced dry and canned food for "all stages of life". It all made sense to me -and the feeding quantities/instructions were very detailed based on the stage of life (kittend, adult, etc.) My kitty loves the food, too! Now the confusing part… just came from our first vet appointment and I just got a 20 minute "lesson" on why holistic foods were not the best choice… stating that cats need the grains for carbohydrates because they’ve evolved over hundreds of years and their digestive tracks aren’t equal to a true carnivore. And that a kitten’s nutrition needs are not the same as an adult cat and just feeding more of the same thing – as is what the all stages of life holistic food instructs – was not the same as feeding a specific food formulated for a kitten. The vet kept pushing Science Diet as the best possible food and diet out there citing all sorts of stats and research etc etc. She said that even though the holistic supporters are well intentioned, the people that really know whats best nutritionally are the people with the letters behind their names. She was so strong about it I almost got the impression she was getting kickbacks from Hills! I even left with a weeks supply sample of dry kitten and canned food. Now I am totally confused! She also told me that Science Diet is the only brand out there that has never had a recall. Which a quick internet search proved her wrong which led me to this site. She also told me that the smaller companies that make the holistic foods may have more quality control issues and less control of the sources which makes them wide open to potential harmful ingrediants. I’m hoping someone has some insight! I really like the idea of the holistic grain free food but I certainly am not a vet and want to trust the experts. BUT who, really, is the expert? Seems to be a very divided issue! Thanks for any advice.

KEN S: I want to feed it alongside wet food so he will only get a bit each day. I’m trying to get him to eat wet food for the majority but want a good quality dry food to go with it. You should know as you’ve answered a few of my question about transitioning.

is Specialty Kitty for a 8 week kitten food?

the directions on the back said to give a kitten twice the amount adult of food to a kitten. however, in the front of the package says premium cat food. (wet food can)

in seaching for a good wet food brand for a kitty that is 8 weeks

I opened up a can of Adult Gourmet Chicken Premium Pate Iams Cat Food today for my cats and part was wet and brown (normal) and part was dried up and white/yellow. I didn’t feed it and got another can this time Tender Beef and it was normal. Was it okay or not? I’m worried!!!

Please help!!!

Thank you!!!

My cat is almost 11 years old and I don’t want her to die prematurely of diabetes or kidney disease from the dried cat food. My mom feeds her Hill’s Premium Cat food (the first ingredient is Brewers Rice – that should tell you how natural this is for a carnivore).

She says she’ll continue to feed her this because all the vets told her it’s fine and she’d rather listen to them than crazy internet people. She also says our cat doesn’t like wet food and has rejected it (I know there are tricks to make the conversion easier – but mom doesn’t want to hear about them).

What can I do? I want my cat to eat healthy canned food, and not premium Hill’s veterinary approved poisonous cat food.

dry cat food or meat.?

My cat was quite sicky and i discovered that he was hardly ever sick on premium dry food only diet. He dies at 17 of old age but kidney failier was the actual thing
so i adopt a cat 2 years ago from an animal shelter. The gave me information on the import ants of giving cat meat as dry food only causes kidney problems and urine infections. so i felt maybe it was my fault my first cat died of kidney failier.
I am looking to adopt a new cat but they don’t have a suitable cat so i have gone to another shelter and they recommend dry premium food as it is more cost effective and healthier.

I am confused. has anyone got any good sources information from their own experiences?

thanks in advance.
i leave out supermarket dry food and fresh water but feed cat meat three times a day as i know cats are grazers. I have been doing this 28 months since i adopted him and the shelter told me to. I much prefer premium dry food and seeing as no one has heard of it being bad i think i will switch him to it and the new addition.

I’m wanting dry AND canned cat food that’s most affordable and natural. The best I could find was Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry for .47 at six pounds. I’m considering using canned tuna or salmon instead of canned cat food (is that better in water or vegetable oil?).

What’s the best brand for my cat and the bank?

Cheap, grain-free cat food?

Right now I’m feeding my cat Wellness brand at for a 12 oz. can (and about equal parts Purina Naturals dry food). Is this a good cat food? Are there better/cheaper alternatives? Expensive premium food is not an option, but I also won’t buy cheap 9 Lives crap. I’m looking for value.

Petmart & Kroger are the only stores in my area that sell cat food. If something is cheap in bulk online, I will be willing to buy it if I can try it and see if my cat likes it first.

Many thanks.

My cats love this food. As far as i can tell the ingredients look good but i dont know much.. the food is AvoDerm by Breeder’s Choice in the Beef cat/kitten variety.

Also, What in your opinion is the best canned cat food to feed your cats and what is the best dry (even though dry isn’t that great i have 8 cats and if i feed them 8 cans of premium food a day i would be broke!) thank youu!
ps. my cat has stomach cancer
and i’d like to feed my cats the best food possible so they don’t get conditions like cancer as my oldest has developed most likely from a poor diet of iams and friskies. (before i knew how bad they are)

We have a cat shelter and feed the premium foods instead of the grocery store fare. We’ve just discovered Authority, and the fact that we can save around per case on the cat food, using Authority canned, is pretty inviting. Has anybody heard any bad reports on Authority canned cat foods? We bought a test case, and the cats love it, and the food looks and smells like high quality food. Also, another issue we’re running into is intestinal problems using Royal Canin Urinary SO 33 dry, a prescription diet for our urinary cats. Has anyone else had any gut issues with the Royal Canin? Thanks, and God bless..
