As a frequent visitor to cat forums, a question that comes up way too often is that of cat dandruff. It’s a problem that affects most of us cat lovers, and if you have a cat, you’ll have to deal with it sooner or later.

But fear not, there is a home remedy for cat dandruff that you can try without taking an expensive journey to the vet, just by looking at the symptoms and environment and taking action based on these symptoms. It is important to confirm first that your problem is not instead cat dander.

Most cat dandruff problems are invariably linked to 3 factors:

1. You have an aged or over-weight cat with dandruff on her rump or tail

If you have a feline friend that is over-weight or has sudden weight gain and dandruff on her rump and tail, it’s highly likely she’s unable to reach these areas to clean herself. This is also a problem for ageing cats that no longer have the mobility to groom themselves.

Just go ahead and brush your cat and you might want to think about grooming her every 2 months. If you decide to give your cat a bath, please avoid using human shampoos as that might make her skin drier and worsen the cat dandruff problem. Always use a cat shampoo and don’t forget to wash thoroughly as excess shampoo stuck on her undercoat may begin the problem all over again.

2. The weather is cold and dry

If your cat only experiences dandruff issues in winter, then it could be the result of the cold and dry environment. Worse of all, the majority of cats like to lay about in the warm comforts of the fireplace, which rapidly dries her skin causing it to flake.

I suggest you take her away from the fireplace every once in a while and observe if the problem persists. Having a humidifier would be a really good idea, both for your cat and also yourself (we get dry skin too…)

3. The cat dandruff is still around after trying out everything

If none of the above apply, it could be a change in furniture A new rug perhaps? See if there are any changes to her environment that she might be sensitive to and try to make the necessary adjustments.
